Alberta Premier Danielle Smith refuses to back down in the face of media backlash, defending a staffer who dared to accurately call Canada’s high immigration levels “reckless and unsustainable.”
Bruce McAllister, head of Premier Danielle Smith’s Calgary office, posted comments on X on Thursday, stating, “The people orchestrating this reckless, unsustainable mass immigration into Canada fill me with profound disgust.”
His post continued: “To deliberately engineer and champion such explosive, unmanageable population growth in your own nation? That’s the height of civic irresponsibility. Was it fueled by greed? Did they line their pockets while irrevocably straining our healthcare, education, and social safety nets? Or does their contempt for Canada’s core values and traditions drive them to flood our borders with millions from societies not built on the same foundations that have made us thrive? Why import from nations with failed systems when our Judeo-Christian heritage and principles have worked so well here? It almost feels like these elites are ashamed of what built this great country.”
“This is a stark reminder of why Albertans, and indeed countless Canadians, harbor deep mistrust toward the Laurentian elite in Ottawa. They seem all too eager to prioritize their agendas over the well-being of the True North strong and free.”
Smith was asked to respond to McAllister’s remarks during a press conference and if his statements reflected her views and those of the United Conservative Party.
“Well, I can tell you that Western society is based on the Socratic Judeo Christian tradition. If you go back and look about why it is we have the society we do, there’s no question that there are some foundational influences to that,” Smith responded.
“However, Alberta was also created since 1905 based on the immense diaspora communities that come here and one of the reasons why Alberta works so well historically is because when people arrive, they have a good paying job, have time to determine whether this is one where they want to put down roots and have a family there.”
Smith added that sustainable immigration allows newcomers to understand the society they are moving to while not putting overbearing pressure on infrastructure like health care and education.
Alberta has led the country in population growth for the past several years.
According to Statistics Canada’s live population tracker, Alberta’s population officially hit five million last year, making it the fourth most populous province.
The last major population milestone for Alberta was four million in October 2023, making the growth over the past 12 years significant.
The Alberta government projects that the province will exceed seven million people by 2051, with most of the growth driven by international immigration.
Most of the overall population is concentrated in Calgary and Edmonton.
“That system broke in the last four years. There’s no question about it,” she said. “It’s not just me saying that it’s unsustainable, it’s the federal government saying it’s unsustainable. They’ve completely changed their international student program. They’ve completely changed their temporary foreign worker program.”
Smith added that her government is currently collaborating with Ottawa to refocus immigration toward “economic migrants.”
Canada’s population has seen exponential growth on a national scale since the turn of the century, largely due to immigration.
The population growth rate has far outpaced other developed nations, according to new data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
In 2024, Canada’s population grew by 34.6 per cent since 2000.
Sweden had the next highest population growth rate at 19.1 per cent.
Other nations with high growth rates were Austria (14.5 per cent), Netherlands (13 per cent) and Denmark (11.9 per cent), while the Slovak Republic and Germany saw modest growth over the same period.

You know you have an immigration problem in a JUDEO CHRISTIAN nation, when the favorite baby name for boys is Mohammed 🤷♀️
Cheers to Premier Smith!
