It has nothing to do with racism. A knife is a weapon. So it’s a religious symbol in his culture. In India. He’s not in India is he? Plus he’s on private property and if safety is an issue, the owner of the property has the right to ask him to leave. One thing I have noticed is that a lot of people coming to Canada are ignorant of our laws and enforcement policies and basic human rights and when they are called on it they cry racism. On the contrary, I think it's their knowledge of the social and religious freedoms granted by our laws and policies, which they don't receive to the same extent in India, that attracts them to Canada. Their religious differences create both social and political tensions and hostilities that many hope to avoid in Canada, yet what is actually happening is that many bring them to Canada as baggage that fuels ongoing hostilities in our Land of Opportunity. As for the freedom of Sikhs to carry daggers as nothing more than a religious symbol, I question how that differs from the moral and religious obligations enshrined in Christianity to defend ourselves and those who can't defend themselves. So again, I wonder how that differs from a Christian carrying a handgun concealed in a purse or a holster, and where the real systemic racism is.

A kirpan does not have to be (a) sharp, or (b) usable as a weapon. He could have worn a purely symbolic kirpan and still practiced his religion. There are many countries where only a ceremonial kirpan is legal. I'm sure you know this.
