Former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura shockingly suggested the state should “join Canada” as President Trump’s administration ramps up efforts to crack down on illegal immigration and escalating social unrest continues across the state.
Former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura is proposing that his state join Canada.
Ventura, a former Navy SEAL and professional wrestler, made the comments during a guest appearance on the Minnesota-based podcast The SpinSisters, which discusses state politics and policy.
“How about since Trump dislikes Minnesota so bad and we’re so out of control, let’s join Canada,” said Ventura.
“Instead of Canada becoming the 51st state of America and lose their health care… I’d like to see Minnesota, all of us become Canadians.”
Ventura went on to propose launching a petition for Minnesota to leave the U.S. and join Canada, a country he believes would “be happy” to welcome Minnesotans.
“And then all those Iowans, think of what a mess it’ll be when they have to cross an international border to come up here fishing,” he added. “I think someone seriously should contact Canada and ask them if they’re open to this.”
Ventura, a longtime critic of U.S. President Donald Trump, blamed the president for the rising violence and tension in Minneapolis, which has seen pushback against ICE officers.
“If it weren’t for President Trump, no one would be dying on the streets of Minneapolis,” he said.
Two people were recently shot and killed by ICE agents in Minneapolis amid massive civil unrest and demonstrations calling for the agents to leave the state.
Trump began deploying agents to Minneapolis and St. Paul in December.
