What I do know is that new data centers, especially those built in cooler climates will be using closed loop cooling systems, just like your car engines cooling system. Very little water will be used, especially relative to evaporative cooling systems and the issues they can create if not mitigated properly.

Last year in the summer when it was scorching hot, they had to issue a warning about people using too much power, because the grid couldn’t handle it. This past winter is a prime example….the province had to issue a request for people to shut off their heaters and “nonessentials” because the power grid couldn’t handle it and would’ve collapsed! So you would’ve had thousands and thousands of people in the middle of freezing temperatures without electricity! Thankfully, Saskatchewan came in and saved the day, but that should not be happening And people should be very concerned about that. In my opinion, it should be one of the governments #1 top priorities….reinforcing/ expanding the electrical power grid.
Now, if the Alberta grid can’t even handle the consumers that are here now, plus, you have the population growth that has increased since last winter, and probably will continue to increase, how on earth is the power grid ever going to be able to handle the MASSIVE additional power sucking from AI Data Centres?!
