Prime Minister Mark Carney blamed the Conservatives for Canada suffering the highest food inflation among G7 nations, claiming their “obstructionism” is driving up grocery bills for Canadians.
“One of the impacts, according to TD Bank, on food prices, is the falling of the Canadian dollar caused by the obstructionism of the members opposite before this government came in place,” said Carney during an exchange in the House of Commons on Tuesday. “What this government is giving Canadians is certainty.”
The TD Bank study that Carney is referring to was published last month, which said that Canada’s food prices “may in part be due to counter-tariffs on U.S. imports and earlier weakness in the Loonie.”
However, the study also noted that food prices “are over 30 per cent higher than in 2019,” at which time the Liberals had already been in power for four years, with former prime minister Justin Trudeau first taking office in 2015.
In December, food prices rose by 6.2 per alone, a pace that was double the rate in the U.S., and more than three times the rates in France and Germany.
According to a release from the Bank of Canada this month, grocery prices have risen 22 per cent over the last three years.
While the central bank also partially attributed the stark jump to the decreasing value of the loonie, it cited a much more recent date.
“Prices for imported food began rising early in the year, partly due to the significant depreciation of the Canadian dollar in late 2024,” it said. “For some items, prices increased exceptionally quickly. Notably, in December 2025, coffee and confectionery such as chocolates and candies were 31 per cent and 14 per cent higher, respectively, than they were in December 2024.”
The same study also noted that the average Canadian household is spending around 11 per cent “of their budget on groceries—and on total inflation.”
Carney announced a temporary hike to the GST credit last month, rebranding the payout as the “Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit.”
“Canadians need a boost today and a bridge to tomorrow,” Carney told reporters from an Ottawa grocery store on January 26. “And that’s why our government has been relentlessly focused on making life more affordable for Canadians.”
The announcement also included a 25 per cent increase in quarterly GST payments over the next five years, plus a one-time 50 per cent top-up this June.
Conservative MP David Bexte said on Thursday that while Canadians may accept the roughly five dollar a week rebate, “it barely makes a dent.”
“Meanwhile, according to Food Banks Canada, almost 20 per cent of food bank clients are employed full time,” he said

This is pure globalist rhetoric on the part of Mark Carney. There are uncountable examples of globalist puppet leaders and their ilk blaming conservatives for the deeds and crimes that they, themselves commit. It's easier to blame one's critics for their own misdeeds while shifting public attention away from themselves. That's their playbook! RM
Carney has no right to blame anyone but liberal policy. He was behind the scenes since 2020 and was financial advisor.
He has no credibility to accuse anyone but himself for our country's downfall!
